Nuffic received an enormous amount of high quality applications for the 1 October deadline of the Netherlands Fellowship Programme (NFP). The selection results are now available.

The Netherlands Fellowship Programmes (NFP) are designed to promote capacity building within organisations in 61 countries by providing training and education to mid-career staff. The NFP is funded by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs under the budget for development cooperation.

The overall aim of the NFP is to help alleviate qualitative and quantitative shortages of skilled manpower within a wide range of organisations. This is done by offering fellowships to mid-career professionals from these countries.

The NFP has three application rounds per year. The outcome of the  October 2011 application deadline has become available on 19 January 2012.

High quality of applications

For this deadline Nuffic received an enormous amount of high quality applications from almost all  countries on the NFP country list.

Nearly all applications were submitted through Nuffic’s online application tool Scholarships Online (SOL) which was introduced in 2011 to make the application process more user-friendly and transparent.

Applications were submitted to a thorough assessment procedure. Both Netherlands embassies in the home countries of the applicants and the Dutch institutions to which the candidates applied, assessed all candidates independently from each other.

The embassy looked at the relevance of the NFP course to the development of the home country and the institutions assessed the academic excellence of the candidates.

PhD studies

Nuffic awarded a total of 27 fellowships for a PhD study to 14 female applicants and 13 male applicants.

The candidates will receive a fellowship for their PhD research with a maximum duration of four years. They will do their PhD research in what is called a ‘picnic model’, spending at least 25% of their research in an NFP country.

Short courses

A total of 486 fellowships for short courses were awarded. The fellowships were equally divided between male and female applicants.

The fellowships are awarded  for a selected number of short courses offered by Dutch institutions that provide professional training at post-secondary level. These courses have a duration of between two weeks and twelve months.
