A delegation of the Japanese National Institution for Academic Degrees and University Evaluation (NIAD-UE) visited Nuffic on 18 September, to learn more about the way we handle credential evaluation and internationalisation in Holland.

After their first visit, in February, the Japanese delegation of NIAD-UE was interested in further discussion on three issues:

  • credential evaluation;
  • Nuffic in its role as national recognition information centre (ENIC-NARIC);
  • Nuffic´s initiatives in evaluating and benchmarking internationalisation of higher education institutions (the MINT project and the IMPI project).

European manual for Japanese institutions

For credential evaluation, the discussion focused on the working procedure for credential evaluation, on the procedure of setting up a NARIC and on the EAR Manual, which describes the good practices for credential evaluation. Nuffic experts were delighted to learn that NIAD-UE has nearly completed a Japanese translation of the EAR Manual for dissemination to all higher education institutions in Japan.

Japanese centre on recognition

The Japanese Ministry of Education has asked NIAD-UE to set up their own national recognition information centre. Therefore, the delegation asked questions about the objectives of the NARIC network and the challenges in setting up such a NARIC centre.

Internationalisation in Japan

As for the internationalisation of Japanese higher education institutions, an in-depth discussion was held about MINT and IMPI. These tools are used for evaluating and benchmarking the internationalisation activities of institutions. The visitors wanted to learn how they can be used by institutions to further professionalise their internationalisation efforts.

Prince’s day

The Japanese visited Nuffic on Prinsjesdag (Prince´s Day), the day on which our Queen presents the main features of government policy for the new parliamentary year by addressing the government and the Dutch people in the Troonrede (Speech from the Throne). That same day NIAD-UE presented its new president, Dr Nogami, to Nuffic. During the visit the royal carriages were leaving the Royal Stables right opposite the Nuffic building, offering the enthusiastic delegation the opportunity to enjoy this cultural event up-close.
