Guatemalan university honours Netherlands and Nuffic
In 2011 San Carlos University in Guatemala has started a NICHE project on land administration which is being implemented by the Faculty of Geo-information Science and Earth Observation (ITC) of the University of Twente and Kadaster International.
The university decided to dedicate three new interactive laboratories to the Netherlands as recognition of its support through the NPT and NICHE programmes. The opening ceremonies of the laboratories were attended by delegates of the ministry of Environment, mayors of local municipalities, the Land Registry of Guatemala, the Dutch Embassy and Nuffic.

Land administration high on the agenda
Under new decentralisation regulations in Guatemala, municipalities have more responsibilities, including land administration and cadastre issues. This means they need more land managers at the decentralised level. Hence, the importance of supporting regional centres to develop research skills and land administration courses. Special attention is needed to offer women more opportunities in the field of land administration.
In the line to support that the NICHE project GTM-042 has been co-developed by three branches of San Carlos University: Centro Universitario de Occidente (CUNOC), Centro Universitario de Oriente (CUNORI) and Centro Universitario de Petén (CUDEP).
Following up on NPT
Under NPT project GTM-005 the Faculty of Agronomy of San Carlos University and three regional university centres (Quetzaltenango, Chiquimula and El Petén) developed the basis for a three-year technical course in land surveying.
