Europe focuses on higher education hub Singapore
Singapore is quickly becoming a primary education hub in the South-East Asian region. The EU and the European member states are working to increase the brand awareness of Europe as an attractive study destination for Singaporean students.
The country attracts approximately 90,000 international students every year, especially from the surrounding countries. The outbound mobility of students focuses mainly on the US and Australia.
Joining forces as one single Europe is of great importance in the competition with bigger nations and will ultimately also help attract students to the Netherlands.
Study in Europe fair
Every year the European delegation in Singapore organises a Study in Europe fair, where a dozen of the member states actively promote their countries. Last year the fair attracted approximately 1,200 visitors. Two Holland alumni (of HAN University of Applied Sciences) working in Singapore assisted Nuffic at the well-visited Study in Holland booth.
Promoting doctorates in Europe
This year, in addition to the Study in Europe fair, additional activities were organised for potential Singaporean doctorate students under the PromoDoc project. This European project aims to enhance the appeal of doctoral-level study in Europe and to improve awareness about opportunities for doctoral study. It especially targets the industrialised countries and territories of Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and the US.
Nuffic, as one of the PromoDoc consortium partners, participated in the Singapore Study in Europe fair with a PromoDoc booth and organised the “Think doctorate, think Europe” seminar. During this event, a group of 40 interested students received information about doctoral studies in Europe. They especially valued the personal experiences and tips that the two alumni shared with the audience.
Events in Japan and Korea
PromoDoc will organise matchmaking events in Japan (November 2012) and Korea (May 2013). The event in Korea will be organised by Nuffic and Dutch higher education institutions are welcome to participate.
