The Holland Alumni Association in Argentina (ACANEB) celebrates its 20th anniversary this autumn. The association was founded by 35 former scholars who wanted to develop, encourage, promote and strengthen the exchange of academic, scientific, cultural, social and technical knowledge between Argentina and the Netherlands.

ACANEB now has about 250 registered members in Argentina and around the world.

Oldest alumnus

The oldest Argentinean alumni network member still alive, José Loschacoff, studied in Holland in 1953 at the Institute of Technology in Delft, these days better known as TU Delft. He remembers his study period in Holland with great affection. “I came just in time to be helpful during the great flood in the Netherlands”.  He went on to stay in the Netherlands and took up a senior appointment at the Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and Environment. In the 1990s he was asked to provide help in Argentina, and was very proud to be able to give back to Argentina something that he had learned in both countries.

20 years of activities

During its 20-year existence, ACANEB has brought numerous visitors from Argentina to the Netherlands, and vice versa. The association has helped to establish contacts between both countries in science, the arts and  business, for example. Other activities to strengthen the relationship between Argentina and the Netherlands, include:

  • the II International Conference organised by a group of alumni from ISS, headed by one of the members of the association, with the assistance of nearly 1,000 young professionals  and ex-scholars from ISS in Latin America;
  • the symposium entitled “The Hague Legal Capital of the World” held in Buenos Aires and Rosario;
  • the joint organisation of Holland Week together with the Dutch Embassy;
  • the representation of Dutch higher education institutions at education fairs, such as EuroPosgrados and Alfa Fair, and local support to Nuffic.

What the future holds

ACANEB aims to continue working together with the Dutch community in Argentina as well as with the academic community in Argentina and Dutch higher education institutions. Gabriel Pardi, President of ACANEB adds: “Furthermore, we aim to create a Latin American network of Holland Alumni associations and establish links with the worldwide Holland Alumni network”.

Reception

The Association celebrates its 20th birthday this autumn with a reception organised by the Dutch Embassy in Buenos Aires. Once the date is set, Nuffic will inform all Dutch institutions via the Holland Alumni network. They can then ask their Argentinean alumni to register in order to be invited to the festivities.
