Transferable skills

How scientists can improve their skills presentation

Workshop round

2 and 3

Presenter

Daniël Schut

Description

For scientists who venture onto the labour market for the first time it would be beneficial to know what their most valuable skills are and to be able to communicate about these skills effectively. However, all too often they are able to present their research skills effectively, but are less aware of the social, communicative and practical skills they possess.

Most doctors are experienced in finishing a thesis, applying for research funds, organising conferences and cooperating with other scientists. They clearly possess a wide range of skills that they would not generally consider to be ‘transferable’;  skills that they can use in many different work settings, both inside and outside the university. In other words, skills that make them attractive for employers on the labour market.

Through this workshop participants will become more aware of their transferable skills. As a result they will better be able to reflect on their career preferences and communicate about these.
