DIS 2011 a rocking party

The Day of the International Student (DIS) was held at the World Forum in The Hague on Saturday 12 November 2011. Around 1,500 international students from across the Netherlands got together on this festive day.

The DIS is an annual event organised by Nuffic in collaboration with the city of The Hague. The event was conceived as an occasion where international students from throughout the Netherlands can meet with peers either from their home countries or studying in the same field.

In addition, the event is a way for Nuffic to show its appreciation for the fact that the students chose the Netherlands to pursue their studies.

Excursions

Before arriving at the World Forum for the event, many students went on an excursion to one of The Hague’s many famous places. Students could choose to visit the Mauritshuis, the Gemeentemuseum or the Panorama of Mesdag among other famous sights.

Opening

At the World Forum, Nuffic Director-General Sander van den Eijnden extended a warm welcome to the international students gathered. He reemphasised that the Netherlands is extremely pleased that they chose to come to this country to study.

Afterwards, the Councillor for Education of The Hague Ingrid van Engelshoven addressed the students. She welcomed them on behalf of her city, which helped make the event happen with its generous sponsoring.

Workshops

During the second part of the afternoon, the enthusiastic students participated in numerous workshops, which covered various subjects such as working in the Netherlands after graduation. The students could also take a beginner’s course in Bollywood dancing or express their creativity in a workshop on painting Dutch clogs.

Festive mood

The event was chaired once again by South African comedian Russel Hekster, who has exchanged his homeland for the Netherlands. His humour added to the event’s entertaining and festive atmosphere.

The DIS ended with a large banquet and a massive dance party.
