Quality assurance and internationalisation
Quality assurance is steadily growing in importance in the field of internationalisation. Internationalisation is no longer regarded as a goal in itself, but as a means to improve the quality of education. But how do we measure the influence of internationalisation on the quality?
Although many national and institutional policies highlight quality as one of the major goals of internationalisation, there is little systematic monitoring of the impact that internationalisation has on quality. Proof of any connection between internationalisation and the quality of education is limited.
EAIE workshop on quality assurance in student exchanges
When organising student exchanges, institutions are shifting their focus from quantity to quality. At the annual EAIE Conference, Nuffic gave a workshop on quality assurance for the organisation of student exchanges. The workshop was developed in cooperation with Manipal University (Malaysia) and the RMIT University (Australia).
Questions discussed at the workshop included:
- Which quality assurance methods are available for student exchanges?
- How can these be put into practice to assure quality of information, academic results or partners?

Manual of Quality Assurance in Internationalisation
In June 2010, the EAIE published a manual of Quality Assurance in Internationalisation as part of their EAIE Professional Development Series. The manuals in this series cover the basic skills every international educator needs. EAIE members have already received a free copy of the book which includes handy tips, tables, checklists and case studies, as well as recommendations for further in-depth reading.
The book is available to buy through the EAIE website.
GIQAC partnership
In 2008, the World Bank and UNESCO established a partnership for the Global Initiative for Quality Assurance Capacity (GIQAC). GIQAC helps to set up quality assurance systems in higher education institutions in developing and transitional countries. More information about GIQAC can be found on the UNESCO website.
Checklists to measure internationalisation
Inholland University of Applied Sciences has developed checklists (in accordance with the EQUIS accreditation standard) that allow schools to measure ten different aspects of internationalisation. The results are categorised in five different phases/levels of internationalisation. These lists can be used as a baseline measurement for internationalisation activities.
