Project budget
The maximum budget for this project is € 1.5 million.
Organisations
This project has been developed by the Faculty of Education of Sana'a University. The tender for this project expired on 2 November 2010.
Nuffic has awarded this tender to CIS-VU - Centre for International Cooperation, which has formed a consortium with Freudenthal Institute for Science and Mathematics Education (FIsme) of Utrecht University and Inholland University of Applied Sciences.
Project description
The bachelor programmes at the universities all prepare teachers as subject teachers for secondary school level. They produce no classroom or domain teachers for basic education so the universities appear out-of-tune with the needs in the school system.
This four-year project focuses on the development and implementation of new curricula for the preparation of domain teachers in Math and Science at four Faculties of Education. In 2005 Nuffic granted Sana’a University a fund to develop Math and Science programmes to train students to be subject teachers. Another initiative, by the World Bank, finances the development of basic education programmes from grade 1-3 at FoE/SU.
One of the main problems of the basic education sector in Yemen is the lack of an overarching strategy, which effectively plans suitable training for an appropriate numbers of teachers at the three required levels:
- classroom teachers
- domain teachers
- subject teachers
Therefore, all project activities will aim to contribute to a national strategy and will be coordinated with the involved ministries. In addition the project will be coordinated with other donors, such as the World Bank and GTZ, who are also active in the field of basic education.
Objectives
The specific objectives of this project are:
- to pilot (design, implement and evaluate) a basic education teacher training programme that will give student teachers the appropriate knowledge and skills to teach effectively and enhance students’ achievements in grades 4-9.
- to ensure quality assurance and accreditation of the newly developed programmes.
- to prepare the roll-out of other teacher education programmes.
- to address gender issues in the new programmes.
- to align the outputs of the developed programmes at participating FoEs with the needs of the labour market.
