Project description
Women in Yemen are facing many challenges, which undermine their status in the private and public spheres. The Women National Committee (WNC) was established in 1996 in response to the 1995 Beijing Conference. The WNC has the mandate to develop women development policies and to represent the government on women affairs.
The WNC has so-called Gender Focal Points (GFPs) in all ministries and local branches in all governorates. Although the WNC faces difficulties related to funds and capacity, it is considered one of the best government bodies in terms of performance and fulfillment of its mandate.
The project aims to improve the Committee's capacities as government policymakers.
Objectives
The project has the following three objectives:
- To build WNC staff's capacity to translate national policies into action plans, programmes and projects in the three intended sectors and to monitor their implementation in terms of gender.
- To build the capacity of the Women Departments in the four ministries of HE, TEVT, Water and Health in order to empower them to fulfil their mandates and coordinate the other NICHE gender projects.
- To coordinate and monitor the other NICHE projects in Yemen regarding gender issues such as female student and staff admission, PhD/MSc fellowships and labour market opportunities.
