Project description
The situation in Yemen's water sector can be described as one of acute crisis. This is caused by the huge imbalance between available water resources and water use. There is critical need to build capacity to conduct research on climate change, health and water.
The National Strategy for the Development of Higher Education in Yemen confirms that Yemeni higher education has hardly any tradition of research due to a lack of resources and incentives.
The country's water challenges cannot be combated without scientific research to identify problems and develop solutions. Hence, support is needed for the development of knowledge and strengthening research capacity in water issues.
The Water and Environment Centre (WEC) was established in 1999 as an independent and multidisciplinary unit of Sana’a University. It is charged with conducting research and training in the field of water and environment.
Objectives
This project aims to:
- Strengthen the institutional capacity of the Water and Environment Centre to undertake basic, applied and policy-supporting research in the water sector to improve education, policy formulation and awareness raising.
- Establish an internal quality assurance system, prepare the Centre towards the standards of future accreditation of educational and research processes and recognition.
- Improve gender equality and women's positions in education and research in the Centre in order to improve gender equality in the water sector through increased access to training, research, services and employment.
- Ensure that new research programmes will incorporate Yemen's labour market needs.
