Tanzania has a rapidly growing proportion of young people. Despite strong economic growth, the formal sector is unable to create enough jobs. Most young Tanzanians survive by working in the informal sector, particularly in urban areas.
The majority of indigenous private businesses are informal and they are not doing very well in terms of growth and competitiveness. This is particularly the case among women-owned businesses. In order to tackle youth unemployment entrepreneurship and life skills should be integrated into all levels of education, starting at primary school.
