Organisations
This project has been developed by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) of the Government of South Sudan together with its affiliate Crop Training Centre Yei. The tender for this project expired on 21 April 2011. Nuffic has awarded this tender to Euroconsult Mott MacDonald, which has formed a consortium with BMB Mott MacDonald, MDF Training & Consultancy, Baraka Agricultural College (Kenya) and Bukalasa Agricultural College (Uganda).
Project description
Since its establishment in 2005, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MAF) and other stakeholders have been struggling to fulfil their mandates due to weak skills and a weak knowledge base. A considerable number of agriculture sector staff (ranging from middle to the lowest levels) needs to be trained.
The knowledge base of farming must be completely rebuilt and modernised as it has been eroded by decades of war during which many people had to flee the country.
Currently, there are very few opportunities for agricultural education and training in Southern Sudan. Crop Training Centre Yei (CTC Yei), affiliated to MAF, is one of the few agricultural training centres that are operational.
This NICHE project aims to strengthen the capacity of both MAF and CTC Yei to enable effective agricultural extension and improve agricultural management and production.
The support given to MAF will lay the foundation for the development of a comprehensive TVET agricultural training and education system. Efforts will be made to align established extension policies with CTC Yei's educational capacity. This linkage should enable upgrading and updating agricultural know-how and practices at the community and local farmer level.
Finally, the project will help transform CTC Yei into a multi-purpose TVET agriculture centre that offers full-fledged training packages in various agricultural areas, with a focus on seed technology. The overall focus will be on extension services in order to reach out to farmers.
