Project description
The lack of adequate health care and health staff in the interior parts of Mozambique remains a main cause of maternal and child mortality. Most midwives in district hospitals have only completed fourth grade, due to the lack of educational institutions that train senior staff. Hence, there is a real need to train staff who can deal with these problems at the district level.
This is what ISCISA does. It trains health specialists and places them in the districts, through a policy of non-physician clinicians (NPCs). This enables ISCISA to help improve health care on the assumption that public health is best served by the broadest possible access. And that health care can be promoted through non-physician providers.
However, ISCISA needs to continue to train high-quality staff, especially in the area of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR).
Therefore, the overall objective of this project is to:
- enhance the (quality of) SRH services, especially in the districts;
- contribute to the reduction of maternal and child mortality.
- improve the qualifications and the number of (male and female) ISCISA lecturers;
- strengthen the Institute and deliver adequately-trained SRH care workers for the districts.
The project includes:
- master's programmes and short courses in Mozambique and abroad (preferably in the Netherlands) for ISCISA lecturers, with an emphasis on SRHR;
- the revision of the curriculum of the following three courses:
- Honours in Midwifery;
- Honours in Paediatric Nursing;
- Honours in Surgery. - participation in (international) conferences and exchange programmes.
