This project outline has been formulated by the Faculty of Education of the Universidade Eduardo Mondlane (UEM) in collaboration with the School of Health Sciences of the University of Venda. The tender for this project expired on 4 August 2010. Nuffic has awarded this tender to Maastricht University.

Project description

This project is placed within the overall university academic and curriculum reform, aimed at improving the accessibility and quality of education.

Maastricht University was invited to prepare a short course on assessment and integration of IT within problem-based learning (PBL) environments and a workshop on PBL in African contexts.

Since the Faculty of Education has joined the reform process, there is a need to increase lecturing staff's skills and competencies to respond to demand.

They are are expected to:

• master the main concepts and principles of PBL strategies;
• systematically apply PBL strategies in their practice;
• effectively use the assessment procedures of PBL.

In the long term, they are expected to provide a truly student-centered environment which gives students ownership of their learning process.
