Project description

In Northern Ghana there is a chronic shortage of nurses and midwives. Due to the geographical setting and limited career perspectives there is a North-to-South brain drain. It is a challenge to attract and retain qualified medical staff, including midwives and paediatric nurses.

The project seeks to address this shortage by strengthening UDS/SMHS, one of the key-organisations responsible for educating nurses and midwives at bachelors and masters level.

The project will seek to:

  • strengthen the management and organisational capacity of UDS/SMHS;
  • develop and run a cost-effective academic programme to train degree level midwives and paediatric nurses;
  • upgrade the capacity of UDS/SMHS staff.

Ghana has made significant gains related to child mortality and maternal health. Between 1993 and 2000, its fertility rate dropped from 5.5 to 5.0. In 2010 it had dropped to 4.0 and in 2020 it should drop to 3.0.
