Organisations
This project has been developed by the Regional Institute for River Transport (RIRT) and the River Transport Authority (RTA). The tender for this project expired on 5 July 2011. Nuffic has awarded this tender to the STC Group, which has formed a consortium with NEA Transport Research and Training and International Maritime College Oman (IMCO).
Project description
This project aims to enable RIRT to develop and manage a training programme that meets the demands of the river transport sector and produces certified manpower who are ready for the future of river transport.
The project will raise the education level of the crew to the standard of secondary school graduates and to support the RIRT to design and deliver effective river vessel training.
The specific outputs of the project include:
- RIRT staff development with regard to teaching skills and the development of new curricula.
- Up-to-date training programmes and curricula
- an M&E and quality assurance systemsystem for the courses
- Up-to-date textbooks, training aids, facilities and reference materials
River transport is a male dominated sector. In this project, a gender scan is planned to map the current situation for women in the sector and to identify new opportunities.
The project will also support the organisation and management to adapt to the new programmes.
Egypt's river transport sector is set to change dramatically in the coming years as the Ministry of Transport (RIRT) wants to increase the waterway transport share of all goods transported in Egypt from 2 to 20% in 2020. This major modernisation project involves:
-
infrastructure improvements (navigation aids, dredging, locks and terminals)
-
private sector partnerships
-
containerisation
