Organisations

This project has been developed by Fayoum Directorate of Agriculture (FAD), a directorate of the Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamation (MALR). The tender for this project expired on 18 August 2011. Nuffic has awarded this tender to Van Hall Larenstein, which has formed a consortium with Centre for Development Innovation (CDI)International Centre for development-oriented research in Agriculture (ICRA) and Fayoum University (FU) in Egypt.

Project description

The Farmer Field Schools (FFS) programme fits into the ministry's "Strategy of Sustainable Agriculture Development until the year 2030" being geared towards improving the standard of living of the rural inhabitants by increasing their skills and access to knowledge.

Thanks to this strategic alignment and the success and popularity of the Fayoum FFS programme, the ministry has decided to institutionalise and replicate the FFS approach across Egypt. FAD has been asked to take the lead, with support from the Fayoum FFS project in setting up an FFS Centre of Excellence.

This project aims to make the FFS Centre of Excellence fully operational and responsive to the needs of the directorates that want to introduce FFS programmes.

Mainstreaming gender and promoting self-employment

Gender is mainstreamed in all project interventions and the project will also promote (self)-employment among poor farmers in the smallholder sector by boosting on- and off-farm productivity.
