Prof. Jan Antonie Bruijn
Pathologist Jan Anthonie Bruijn is Professor in Immunopathology at Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC). His main responsibilities are patient care, teaching and research.
At the LUMC he was previously president of the Educational Board for Medical and Biomedical Sciences, the Internationalisation Committee and the Platform for Digital Support in Education.
He is active in the Dutch Liberal Party (VVD) as chair of the party’s Committee for Education and Science and the party’s council. In the past he has been chair of the liberal party branch Wassenaar of which he is now an honorary member. He was chair of the liberal party Election Committee for the Province of Zuid-Holland in 2006 and the National Election Committee for the party in 2010 en 2012. At present he is chair of the party’s Coordination Committee.
Professor Bruijn is chair of the Curriculum Council of the European Platform and from 2005-2012 he was a member of the National Education Council. Amongst other things he is a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Applied Science Leiden, the Rijnlands Rehabilitation/Convalescence Centre, the Board of Governors of the Prof. mr B.M. Teldersstichting and a member of the Editorial Board of its magazine, Liberaal Reveil.
Professor Bruijn is also chair of the Education Committee of the Teldersstichting. From 2011-2012 he was a member of the External Quality Assessment Exam Validation Committee of the Netherlands Association of Universities of Applied Sciences [HBO-raad].
He is a member of the Committee for Expediency in Higher Education of the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sciences, the Evaluation Committee of the Scientific Council for Government Policy and the Council for the Control of Animal Medication for the Ministry of Health (VWS).
Internationally, Professor Bruijn has been active in policy development and aid in the field of education, science and health in various aid programmes, including a position as chair of the Renal Pathology Society and as a member of the National Contact Group Education and Training for Afghanistan.
On 1 January 2012 Professor Bruijn was appointed chair of the Advisory Council for Science and Technology Policy (AWT). On 6 November 2012 he was appointed to the Dutch Senate.
Professor Bruijn has published more than 300 articles in international scientific journals and was a PhD supervisor 32 times. He completed his studies in medical sciences in Rotterdam and Baltimore and obtained his PhD from the University of Leiden and Boston.
